Imagine If: Batman Forever, Release Date 1953

Imagine if Hollywood had released tent-pole comic-book movies starring their iconic characters around the time of the source material’s release date. For the purposes of this experiment, we will say that a movie would be released 5 years after the introduction of the character, and only movies that have been made would be made.

Ten years after Batman, the franchise was still going strong. For the third film in the franchise, Mitchum still donned the cowl, but Dickie Jones, 27 years old, would don the peter pan booties for the last time as Robin.

As much as anything, the franchise was an excuse for the villains to be showcased.

Producers developed a high-energy song and dance number to showcase O’Connor’s talents.

Celebrated everyman actor brought depth to the role as Harvey Dent, and surprised audiences with his darker side as Two-Face.

Looking to bring some sex appeal, producers insisted on some eye candy, and writers developed the characters of Sugar and Spice, assistants to Two-Face.

She would be the first African-American actress nominated for a Leading Actress Oscar the following year, but memorably played the role of goody-two-shoes Sugar here.

Wow or Woe, Comic Release Date 6/28

IMG_0907.JPGDear Arthur Adams,

Why does your Jean Grey look like a porn star/ Hollywood starlet in X-Men Blue #6?

The reason I ask, is because in all her other appearances she is very clearly drawn with a small bust-line.

The art in this issue is all over the place, that isn’t your fault.

Even with the Jean’s excitement of her future training on the last page, this one is losing me. WOE.

Elektra #5

Humanizing and youthifying the title character is an interesting choice, one in-line with the sameyness of the Whedon-verse characterizations. With that said, I have enjoyed this, and this one gets a WOW primarily for Arcade’s callback to, what I called, the Hopeless Saga.

Batgirl #12

One of the few DC books in my pull-list, and the one I am enjoying the most. Batgirl is sassy, smart, and written well. This issue was a stand-alone story!!!! One that was interesting, even. For that alone, it gets a WOW!

Crisis of Comics: The Legends of Yesterday, Tomorrow

Crisis of Comics takes a weekly look at some of the recent publishing woes by the Big Two, offers up theories and concludes with suggestions about what might be missing.

On a bad week, Legends of Tomorrow the TV show has more viewers than the number of issues sold combined for DC’s top 10 comics.

People are enjoying the tale of this “made-for-tv” team. Might I lament that the original “made-for-tv” heroes are being passed over…

162498137_688b5d6af9_oInstead, DC is missing the chance to sell a book closely resembling an Arrowverse show, but also to bring in some significant characters from the Distinguished Chronology of their publication history:

  • Firestorm
  • Atom
  • Rip Hunter
  • White Canary
  • Hawkgirl (even if not giant)
  • Hawkman
  • Heat Wave
  • Vixen

These characters are in the series and would be great to deliver to readers.

Given the temporal anomalistic nature of the team, why not include some other characters long-missing from DC?

  • Stargirl
  • Plastic Man (you had to see this one coming, right?)

Superkitchen

We are at PortCon today. We always try and do some new panels every year. This year, we are making a dream come true… will it be a nightmare? Superkitchen: Live!

Screen Shot 2017-06-15 at 12.20.22 PM

Just like Emeril or Alton, we are doing a live cooking show, while also doing a presentation on the Mighty Marvel Cookbook from 1977. Given the limitations, many recipes were just not practical to cook LIVE in front of an audience. But, that didn’t stop us from trying many of the recipes in this tome of tummy tumult.

But, we found some gems, including this one.

Next up, Superkitchen the video series!

Watch out, Hannah Hart!

The Next Big Thing

tumblr_inline_njxhdhZaTP1sbtxw8Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, I would offer up, is responsible for many of the more adult reimaginings of established properties, having started the ball rolling with Afterlife With Archie, followed by Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Archie comics then went for it, bringing on Mark Waid, and there is the decidedly dark and mature Riverdale TV show. there is a Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys comic being published, which contains many callbacks to famous 20th century kids-lit characters of the past.

Harvey4If there are any producers out there looking for the next property, I am ready for my finder’s fee: Harvey Comics!

  • Richie Rich as a morally responsible young man wanting for nothing.
  • Reggie Van Dough as Richie’s morally reprehensible, also wealthy cousin.
  • Gloria Gladd, the girl next door not affected by the wealth of Richie.
  • Mayda Munny, the female counterpart of Reggie.
  • Jackie Jokers, the clown prince of showbiz.
  • Casper, the friendly ghost.
  • Wendy, the good little witch.
  • Hot Stuff, the little devil.
  • Bunny, the international model and actress.
  • Little Lotta, her insatiable appetite gives her superhuman strength.

Gossip Girl meets Twin Peaks meets Buffy. Set at the prestigious Harvey Academy preparatory school in the northeast, this reboot follows the characters as they deal with all the trials and tribulations of young adulthood, shenanigans ensue!

Or maybe I will just run it for a Monsterhearts one-shot game…

  • Mortal
  • Serpentine
  • Neighbor
  • Queen
  • Coyote
  • Ghost
  • Witch
  • Infernal
  • Vampire
  • Ghoul (primarily because of The Hunger move)

True story- a member of the Harvey family once complained that the Christina Ricci Wendy was too much, lacking the charm and innocence. With most Harvey properties doing very little these days, would said family-member turn down a chance to reintroduce the characters to a whole new audience?

Imagine If: Avengers, Release Date 1968

Imagine if Hollywood had released tent-pole comic-book movies starring their iconic characters around the time of the source material’s release date. For the purposes of this experiment, we will say that a movie would be released 5 years after the introduction of the character, and only movies that have been made would be made.

With Ant-Man having been released, the pieces were in place for a full-blown Avengers film! Returning cast members included:

the-swimmer-1968-e1324749503445Rock Hudson as Iron Man, Jack Lemmon as the Hulk, Rutger Hauer as Thor, Jerry Lewis as Loki, and in the most shocking of developments, 56 year old Burt Lancaster as Captain America (see right).

With this much star power, there was no way the film could fail, right?

What started as curious casting choices, and with so many Huge Hollywood egos on display, the film was successful, but producers quietly decided that this would be the one and only film in the franchise with this cast.

Wow or Woe, Release Date 6/21

699798_017ccacb72a7e0c4288b867b99a58397ced1236eDaredevil 22

The Smith-Bendis-Brubaker run of Daredevil is my all time favorite extended run of fiction. I have enjoyed, to varying degrees that which has come after, but it has never clicked for me in a magical way.

Calm down.

DD #22 was one of the better issues and resolutions in this post S-B-B era of the Man Without Fear. I don’t want to spoil anything, but it was one of those issues that questioned and flipped some of the pre-established status-quo issues in comics.

That warrants it a WOW!

Also in my pull this week: Archie, Knights of the Dinner Table, Nancy Drew & The Hardy Boys, Thor, Invincible Iron Man, Luke Cage, PP: TSS-M, Secret Empire: Brave New World, Secret Empire: Underground, Wonder Woman/ Tasmanian Devil, Iceman.

Crisis of Comics: The Strongest Ten There Is

Crisis of Comics takes a weekly look at some of the recent publishing woes by the Big Two, offers up theories and concludes with suggestions about what might be missing.

Take the biggest Occam’s Razor in comics, and remove all the danger, make it a cool pill that anyone can take to gain superpowers and what do you have?

The state of comics today.

Bah-Dum-Tish!

Red Hulk was the worst.

No, wait, then they took an already awesome character, who stood side-by-side with gods, armed only with his genius intellect, take that character and make a hip, cool, new Hulk.

NO! Thank. You.

Gamma Irradiation seems to now be as common as Kryptonians or radioactive spiders or any number of other things.

Amadeus Cho doesn’t deserve this.

1065748-jb4I offer up the 10 acceptable gamma irradiated characters:

  • Hulk/ Banner
  • She-Hulk- Jennifer Walters
  • Skaar (I loved Planet Hulk and World War Hulk)
  • Lyra
  • Abomination
  • Doc Samson
  • The Leader
  • Jailbait – just because this somehow made it past the censors as a name.
  • Ogress- the only other acceptable member of the Riot Squad with Jailbait.
  • Betty Ross- her time as a red She-Hulk can be referenced, but let’s get back to Harpy!
